Tropical countries presently contribute represents about 30% of the world marine fish catch of about 67 million tons (Table I). The enormous amount of fish that this figure represents does not, however, give a real idea of the importance that fish (including allied products such as molluscs.

Fiji has a tropical maritime climate without great extremes of heat or cold ().The dry season extends from May to October (winter months), and the wet season from November to April (summer months) and this is associated with the movements of the SPCZ and associated southeast trade winds (Kumar, Stephens, & Weir, ).The SPCZ lies over Fiji in the wet.
